Dr. Hart stepped up to the ledge of the pool. His dark hair fell around his slender face in a shadowy curtain. Gold eyes searched the dephts of the pool. The deep water was perfectly still, most of the experiments were in bed... That might be because it was nearly four in the morning. Although he was confident in himself, he still felt uncomfortable showing off body. His arms were marked with scars that he wasn't so proud of. At 36 years of age, he was still self-multilating, I mean, how childish!
He pulled the towel that was wrapped around his shoulders and tossed it aside. It hit the tile floor with a dull muffled sound. Clarence's pale skin seemed to glow in the bleach white light. It was pulled taunt over his bones. His collarbones and ribs stuck out nearly painfully. He definately didn't eat enough. He was too busy. Plotting man's down fall took a lot out of someone, especially when trying to do it in cognito.
He raised a slender hand, brushed the hair out of his face and dove into the water. Ripples spread out from his entry point, working their way across the water lazily.
Under the water, the world was silent around him. He enjoyed the temporary silence, the weightlessness. Escaping the world, if only for a moment. Alone, he was content. Alone, he could forget how humans were multiplying like an infectious virus, consuming and destroying everything in their path. Disgusting!
The doctor (known to the experiments and other staff as a mere janitor and part-time cook, which is just the way he liked it) surfaced and took a deep breath of warm, moist pool air. A few droplets of water traced the scar on his face from his eye, curving down over his cheekbone and ending at his jaw. Kicking back, he floated on his back, looking up into the high ceiling, seeing, but not seeing anything.
He was lost once again, in that terrible, beautiful, twisted place of an insane genius. Trapped in his mind. Gold eyes slowly unfocused as he floated and thought. His thoughts felt heavy and waterlogged.

Jareth strolled leisurely through the empty hallways. He brought a hand to his mouth to cover a large yawn. He wasn't tired... just bored. He hardly ever slept, he felt as though there was much more he could be waisting his time on. He regretted that more experiments were not like him. He felt the world would be a much better place...for him at least...and a lot more fun.
His delicate hearing picked up on the soft splashing of water coming from, no surprise, the pool. The devious smirk on his lips became broader. Fun at last!
With a few jaunting skips, Jareth made his way down the hall and through the pool doors. He made his way, barefooted, through the mold and wet concrete that was the male change room, gingerly stepping his way around undrained puddles and pools of unknown substances that he could only label as 'slime'. He grimaced, breathing only through his mouth to avoid the stench, and pushed the door out to the pool open with a narrow shoulder.
It took him awhile before he spotted the man in the water. He snickered to himself, then pressing himself against the wall, creped around the side of the pool, unseen, and made his way onto the highest diving board from where he could perch and watch the unknowing fool.
He looked down at the man. Dark hair, golden eyes, he'd seen him round before, a humble janitor if he wasn't mistaken. Someone a devil of his standards really should have no contact with... but.....
Jareth smiled cynically, exposing two very sharp eye teeth. He loved the week. So much easier to manipulate. So much easier to use. The last few days he had felt it. He was not sure yet what it was, but he knew it was big, and when it came, he was going to make sure he was well protected by a wall of inferior beings. All ready he had a handful of followers ready to throw down their lives on cue, and this was with no manipulation required! A janitor...with keys to the place...maps...names.... could be very useful....
After a moment of considerated observation, the demon called out to the man.
"Salutations my good fellow!" He purred, applying heavy emphasis to his speech, " May I ask what in Heaven's name you're doing down here at this time of night?" he asked, crouching down over the board in an action described as 'looming'

Words didn't register at first, or at all. He continued to look up at the ceiling as if no one had spoken at all. His mind clicked and whirled then screamed to a standstill as it processed that someone had spoken. After a moment, he looked up, gold eyes locking on the one successful Demon experiment of the lab. Sure, there were humans with demon powers, but no demons in a human body like him. A beautiful creation that had been hand-crafted by Clarence himself. At least, his body had been crafted with the manipulation of the D.N.A that Clarence had so gracefully sculpted.
"Ah, Experiment L Nine." He said, rotating the the water so he was now shedding it instead of floating in it. "You care to ask me what I'm doing here?" He asked. "You know me, I'm one of the sole janitors... I don't have time to relax during the day, too busy taking care of all of you, making sure you have food, keeping your dorms clean, providing endless entertainment you all reap from tormenting me." He said softly, happily. But there were dark, pulsing undertones, like an undertow ready to pull a swimmer under. The doctor swam over to the edge of the pool and climbed out, working his way to the boards.
He climbed up one a few feet lower than the demon's. "I should be asking you what brings you here." He stated, standing at the end of the board, testing it's bounciness. "You seem to have this great skill of seeking out the best targets to torment. I just happen to be one of the few people up at this hour, making me an appropriate choice." He said.
With a graceful jump, he bounced on the board, launching himself into the air, where he did two front flips and a twist. "I guess." He said as he descended, stretching out as he reached the water. He entered in a perfect dive, hardly creating a wave at all. For having next to no coordination on land, one would never believe his grace on the boards. He surfaced and swam to the lowest board. Clarence swung his arms over the board and looked up. "So Jareth, " He said, using the experiment's 'name'. Let them believe in self, let them believe in freedom. "What do you want?"

Jareth grimaced at the man's words, bottom lip protruding outward as if in a pout, " You make it sound as if we are but irksome pets." He stood gracefully and leaned his weight against the railing, "Come Here Experiment L Nine!" The Devil mocked in a high pitched whine, holding syllables for strange amounts of time for added effect, "Be a good creature and stay put while I clean your cage." The demon spat, his voice verging on annoyed.
After a moments pause he sighed loudly. Everything the creature did was loud to be truthful. Very dramatic. He acted as though he was always in the spot light, center stage. He sighed and looked down at the man who had now made his way up onto a board a few feet lower than himself. He watched as the man made a graceful descent into the water bellow. " We both deserve better than this he hissed before the man had hit the water.
The man treaded back over to the side of the pool and braced himself on the edge, " So, Jareth," The creature grinned savagely at the use of his chosen name, "What do you want?"
The creature placed a clawed hand to his chest, his face playing signs of dramatized shock," Nothing but a pleasant conversation my good man! I find it quiet detrimental for you to even consider that I want more than your company." He laid himself down on the board, dripping his head over the side in order to watch the doctor.
He smiled naturally down at the man, his head resting in his hand gently, " No my dear sir, It's not what I want.... What tis it you Want?" His free hand dropped over the edge of the board, his long fingers playing with the moist air around them, " you poor thing... always pushed around..." he purred, " I hate to see it that way. you, deserve more..." He licked his lips playfully, " I truly mean that."

Dr. Hart raised an eyebrow. What was he playing at? "Well, first off, they aren't cells, they're dorms." Clarence said slowly. "They used to be steel cages and bars, but a few of the scientists protested, I included, and we got you all dorms, you know." He said in a huffy tone. He hated experiments who took what they gave them for granted. Sure, life wasn't the best in the lab, but it could be way worse than it was.
His golden eyes took in every carefully planned movement of the Demon. Each move was graceful and perfectly played. "A conversation, eh?" He asked, smiling. "Then why don't you join me for a swim, instead of lurking up there?" Clarence said causually, pushing himself off the board and swimming a slow lap around the pool.
When the Demon spoke again, Clarence stopped and grabbed onto the edge of the pool so he could watch and listen. "I don't want anything." He said softly, dropping his eyes to the water of the pool. He had a soft spot for all his experiments. They were his creations, his ideas... His skills, no matter who preformed the surgury, Clarence had designed it. "I don't get pushed around that much." He said, trying to minimize his 'problems'. "You overreact, there's nothing wrong with the way I'm treated here." He whispered now. "What do you think I deserve?" He asked. "I hardly deserve anything at all."
Clarence pushed off the wall, doing a backwards summersault in the water and swam deep under the water. He wanted the Demon to think he didn't want to hear what he was saying. He waited until his lungs burned for air and his muscles tingled. He pushed off the bottom and reached the surface. "Do you really mean that?" He asked, his golden eyes dark and guarded as he looked up at the demon. "Do you really mean that? Or are you yanking my chain?" He asked.
"Why don't you join me down here, then?" His voice was full of suspision.

"Brilliant." The demon cawed, " And we applaud you for your protest. A kind alteration that; a cold, hard floor to a cold, hard, cot." he smiled apologetically, "I apologize for my crude and sarcastic tone. I Honestly approve of the change. For the best it was."
Hey looked the doctor over and grimaced at the offer, " Down there?" He had the look about him of a displeased cat, " Rather dance the tango with a level 6 experiment." With that, the demon sprang to his feet and made the leap down onto a lower board.
Jareth listened to what the man had to say, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. Soon afterwards, the the man dipped back underwater. The demon waited patently, jumping down to the next board, shoving his hands in his pockets and pretending to be interested in his feet.
"Do you really mean that?"
Jareth looked up from the floor, "Why wouldn't I?" He made the last hop to the lowest board, laying down on his stomach and taking the position he was in earlier. His eyes narrowed, and when he spoke next his voice was was much darker and sweet like honey, " I've seen how the treat you. They belittle and abuse you. Don't try and protest." As he went on, his voice became softer and he began talking faster in order to draw the man in, " You have a beautiful mind, yet they exploit you. They treat you like one of us, you see that too, I can tell. I see what you're capable of. I've always seen how beautiful you are. You, deserve better."

"If you really find the cot hard..." Clarence started. "I could...now the key word being could, find you a softer matress, after all, you are the only successful demon experiment...." As Dr. Hart watched, the demon sprang down a board, despite his obvious dislike to do so. He jumped down until he was on the lowest board and then he laid down, streching out over the board. The next set of words sent chills down his spine.
There was no dening that what the demon said was true. No truer words had been spoken thus far. Clarence pushed off his wall again, gliding sliently through the water until he was right beside the diving board that Jareth loitered on. The doctor reached up and held onto the edge of the board, careful not to touch the experiment. "I'm not beautiful." Clarence said, being honest. He wasn't playing anymore. "Don't say that."
Clarence reached up now, carefully touching Jareth's cheek with the very tips of his fingers. "My human face...so randomly selected by D.N.A..." He whispered. "So hardly compares to yours, which so was so carefully scuplted by the hands of higher scientists than me." Well, alright, so the last part was a lie, but he couldn't give away that he was the head of the whole lab. It would just ruin things. "More beautifully created than anything that the hand of God could decide...." His fingers trailed down the Demon's cheek and then neck lightly like the kiss of a summer breeze. He let his fingers fall noiselessly back to the board.
"I deserve everything I get." He whispered. "Can't you see my wretchedness?" He asked. "My skin, so marred... So imperfect. I don't compare to a near-God like yourself. I don't deserve to get the time of day from you."
"Us humans are below you experiments... Experiments yes...but many of you are more beautiful, faster, smarter, better... So why should you treat any of us with respect when we clearly deserve none?"

Jareth flinched at the doctor's touch, but let the man run his fingers over his neck. Physical contact was important to humans, he reminded himself. If he was going to get the man to trust him, he was going to have to... open up?
He smiled slightly, " Well, I can't deny you there. I am beautiful. But it was the beautiful minds of humans who created me." He pulled back and looked the man over, " I must say though, For something God made, you humans aren't that much of an eyesore..."
Jareth sighed at the man's words, " What use is my praise if you're just going to deny everything. I'm waisting my breath on you it seems." he rolled over onto his back and looked up at the ceiling. The fan's turned lazily as the man bellow splashed silently. The demon sighed once more. He did believe most of what he had said. That was one thing about him, he never lied if he didn't need to. Twisted words, yes.... but lie? He saved those for when he really needed them.
" You don't really believe what those other doctors say about you, do you?" The demon fiddled with his long fingers, " They're just jealous really. They know you have a special connection with the experiments that they could only dream of grasping..." the demon trailed off. he was quiet tired of this man. his usual tactics of 'buttering' his prey up was not working on this man and was all in all quiet tiring. Who was he to try and change the man's mind?
The demon bent his head back over the board so that he could look the man in the eye... from a slightly awkward angle, "If this is how you feel about yourself why don't you just give up?"

Clarence fell slient. He chose not to respond for a moment. He listened, feeling the board move as Jareth rolled on to his back to look up at the ceiling. Jareth was right though, he did have something with the experiments that the other scientists didn't. He thought of the experiments like his children. He loved them. The other scientists...they saw them just as experiements. But his self esteem was shot from years of bullying... "It's not the scientists I believe." He said softly.
"I..." He trailed off for a moment. "I just, I love and give but no one has ever returned anything but hate or abuse before." When the demon looked up to make eye contact, Clarence froze, his heart beating loudly in his chest. He was worried that the demon would hear and now how much he had worked him up. "Let's give you a brief pyschology lesson. If a child is told that he is loved and cared for, he'll be confident in himself later in life, however, in a family in which loveis never expressed...He'll become unsure of himself and self-concious. And then, if that same child is bullied, more often than not they are, because they're already 'weak'." He said softly. "Then their ego is cut back even more..." Clarence shrugged. "Guess which child I was." He whispered.
"I can't give up. There are other people to live for. One doesn't have to live for themself. There are others to live for." Clarence sighed. "The experiments need someone who actually cares." He said, giving a smile. It was water-weak. "If not for me, then who would watch out for you guys? Who would clean your rooms, who would cook your food? More importantly, who would listen to what you have to say? Who would sympathise with you? Who would cry with you?" He asked, his voice heavy with unshown emotion.
"No one."
Clarence pushed off the diving board with such a force that it bounced wildly for a moment. He swam to the edge of the pool and pulled himself out. Tears burned in his eyes. He would NOT cry, he wouldn't. He bit the inside of his lip and felt the dull pain, then the sharp pain as he bit through the soft flesh there.
The taste of blood filled his life and he took a deep breath. He said at the edge of the pool and looked over at the demon. "Have you ever lived for anyone beside's yourself?"

The demon raised an eyebrow at the man's pity story, " Hmmmm...interesting that. Never knew you humans were soooo sensitive." He gave a small huff, " you humans should be more supportive of each other. You won't get anywhere if you don't at least cooperate..." he though his own words over for a minute or two. " Us experiments might not get along on a regular basis....but when push comes to shove you better believe that we are ready to risk our lives for one an other.... Well maybe not my life...."
Jareth sighed, " You have a valid point there. you are the closest thing to a.... Friend..." The demon twist the word around his tongue till it didn't feel quite a welcoming as it should have, " Us creations have. And we do so enjoy nurishment...don't know how we'd live with out it."
Without warning, the man pushed off from the diving board, rudely disturbing the devil and nearly knocking him off into the water. It a frantic effort to stay dry, Jareth clung to the board, doing a half roll over it's face and pulling himself back nearer the edge of the pool. He took a few calming breaths, regaining control of his facial features and brushing loose strands of hair back into place.
He glared over at the man, revealing his unnaturally shape teeth. Steady Jareth, He told himself, No need to get up set. you're having a perfectly good conversation, no need to go and ruin it...
He controlled his temper, slowly smoothing things out, while watching the man crawl out of the pool. He smelt blood, but he couldn't let that bother him...he did wonder where the smell was coming from though....
"Have you ever lived for anyone besides yourself?"
"Hmm?" Jareth looked at the man, " Can't say that I have." He smiled casually, " But then I haven't lived nearly as many years as you have, my good fellow. It might be something that comes with age." he gave a snide chuckle, " I haven't had a reason to. I take care of myself and I expect others to do the same." he stood up from his spot on the diving board, and with careful, grace-filled steps, walked his way over to the man and knelt down beside him, " that's not to say I would never help someone if they were in need. I'm a friendly guy. I'd help anyone out....." he smiled in a way he hoped was pleasantly, then added , " For a price..." Which was more for himself to hear than the man.

Dr. Hart couldn't help himself, when the demon lurked closer and knelt, his heart rate jumped. He didn't look up at first. He couldn't look up at first. He swallowed and there was an audible click. His mouth felt as dry and waterless as the Sahara desert. Goosebumps rose up over his flesh and a shudder grabbed his spine, shaking him like a limp doll. "It comes with desperation." He said softly, his golden eyes carefully picking out the small detail in the tiles, the way water beaded on it, bending the light and distorting the image. A thin layer of grime lined between them. "It comes from not being able to live for yourself."
"You like living for yourself? You like the knowledge that everything you do is for yourself... Well, people like me... We can't do that... I mean, we just... we hate ourselves... the only way to live for us is to make other's lives better....or sometimes worse...." Why was he telling the demon this? Yeah, it worked with her persona that the experiments knew, but it was the truth too.
Clarence leaned in without realising it and looked up into his sleek eyes that were like molten gold. They were gold, they didn't hint at it like his own. His own eyes were like glints of gold in the mud. "I don't know why I'm telling you this." He whispered, looking away from the bright golden eyes. "I hardly know you, Jareth."
The doctor took a deep breath and stood, walking over to his towel and picking it up. He wrapped it around his shoulders. He was cold, his lips were starting to go blue and his teeth chattered. It also gave him an excuse to hide his horribly marred arms. "And I don't even know if you can understand where I'm coming from..." He whispered as he slumped against the cold wall. His eyes were drawn back to the God-like figure of the demon. "I mean, you're happy by yourself, your happy with what you are.... I can never imagine that... I know you can hide your flaws...but one can hide from oneself..."
"All my flaws seemed to be laid in front of me like butterflies pinned to a block of wood....There is no where to hide...And there is no way to change ones nature." He said and sighed deeply. It was a lonely.
"Jareth?"
"Would you be willing to help me out?" He asked softly, his voice floating out through the room. It echoed faintly off the far walls. It sounded weak and whiny to himself. A look of torment crossed his features for the briefest moment before he spoke again. "Just answer this one question... Will you stay with me for a little while?"

"Desperation, hmmmm?" The demon moved closer, he liked the effect it had on the man, " I'll have to remember that one..."
"You like living for yourself?"
The demon grinned foully at the man, " No other way to live if you ask me."
"You like the knowledge that everything you do is for yourself... ?"
"Is there any other way to be?" The demon cocked an eyebrow, he was good at it, " If you ask me, your opinion is the only one to matter. No one is a better friend, and no one can punish you as well. If you are not happy with yourself, you are not happy with life and there for, they is no reason to go on living." the demon lifted his head a little higher. " Sure, the idea of helping people is quiet noble, but when it all come down to it, it won't get you anywhere in life. When you're old and withered you are going to be left with nothing but your own mind, and for God's sake man, You better hope it likes you!" The demon let out a harsh laugh, " No. Self is the only object of importance in this life."
"I don't know why I'm telling you this. I hardly know you, Jareth."
The demon put his hand proudly to his chest and leaned in over the man, " Simple. I Am a devil. A creature of sin and indulgence. It's natural for someone like you to open up to me, for who am I to judge?" He sneered politely, and leaned his head in over the man's so that he was cast in his shadow, " Besides, it's well known that humans are known to open up to the first thing that shows interest in them."
Jareth followed the man up and over to the wall where he crouched back down beside him, refusing to touch the grim coved surface of the wall. he stayed just out of reach of the man, he was a higher figure and had his limits.... " I will not pretend to understand all of what you go on about, but most of it does ring true for me. I doubt there is a person out there who has not had a taste of what you are feeling now."
"Jareth?" the creature tilted his head at the call of his name, the smile on his lips disappearing for all but a moments thought,"Would you be willing to help me out?" His smile crept like wildfire back across his face, " Just answer this one question... Will you stay with me for a little while?"
"My dear fellow," he purred, " I would stay with you till death if you asked." True. But he wouldn't make it entirely pleasant, " Your wish," He bowed slightly in his stooped state, " Is my Command."

"Ah, that might be part of it... There isn't anything I can imagine that you probably haven't done, correct?" Clarence asked with a small smile. "I guess it does make it easier..." The demon loomed closer again, and Clarence lost his train of thought. He hadn't been like this before around Jareth, then again, he had never been alone around him either. Maybe it was just his demonic powers...But... Could a demon manipulate his emotions this much? He wasn't sure, but either way, his heart was pounding at Jareth's next words.
I would stay with you till death if you asked.... A deep blush broke out over his cheeks and he looked away from the bowing demon. "I...Th-thank you..." He stammered. He shivered, feeling the cold tiles against his back. The room seemed crisper, the colours more vibrant. "Do you really mean that?" He asked the demon, turning his brown eyes back to his form. "I've...Never had anyone tell me that before."
Clarence coughed awkwardly and shivered again. "Let's go somewhere warmer though... I'm too cold here..." He pushed off the wall and walked by Jareth, his shoulder just brushing against his. Just the briefest contact was like he had touched a live wire. "I need to go through the locker room though...All my clothes is there." He led the way to the change room.
The change room was warmer than the pool and Clarence finally stopped shivering. He turned and looked at the demon. "Would you mind turning around while I change?" He asked softly, blushing again. He waited for the demon to turn and quickly pulled off his swimming trunks and changed into a pair of blue, worn jeans and a white button-up shirt. He turned back to Jareth and walked up to him. He tapped him on the shoulder. "You can turn around now..." He said softly.
"Hey Jareth... What was it like? Where you came from? Does being trapped in a human body, even one as beautiful as that, suck?"

Jareth smiled at the man, " Of Coarse I mean that Clarence." he raised a hand in oath, " On my life I'm not a Lying man."
"I've...Never had anyone tell me that before."
"it's about time someone did then." The devil snarled, getting up to follow the man into the change rooms. he felt the man touch him, sending shocks through his body. humans were such an alien creature to him...
He followed the man into the change room, shaking his head at the surroundings, " Well, I know you must be a busy man and all....But I must say! the state of these change rooms is atrocious!"
The doctor gave him a concerned look before turning awkwardly and calling, "Would you mind turning around while I change?"
The thought hadn't even crossed the devils mind, but he guess it was for the best. Humans were known sometimes for being extremely Modest. The devil gave an interested giggle before turning around and half-heartedly covering his eyes with a hand. the other hand balanced on the coordinating hip in a very near 'sassy' way. he waited till he was given the go ahead to turn back around, then made his way over to the man.
"Hey Jareth..." Once again, the demon grinned at the use of his name, " What was it like? Where you came from? Does being trapped in a human body, even one as beautiful as that, suck?"
"Hmph." The demon took a step away from the man in thought, " I don't know to be quite honest." he shrugged his shoulders and made a gallant leap onto one of the benches, swinging from a support beam as he did, " i know not of the other world you brought me from. in fact, if it wasn't for the fact that you people keep insisting That i am a demon, I'd hardly believe I was one myself." He crouched down, rubbing his chin for a moment in thought, " To put it into a form you may understand...think of it like this. If one believes in reincarnation, they believe they have been many other people in many other life times. they do not remember having been these people, nor do they have any concrete evidence, only a strong power in their heart that forces them to believe in this."
The demon paused a moment wondering if he should add anything to what he had said to ensure the man that he was, in fact, a demon, " The doctors are planing to hold a type of seance in order to have me talk to the covenant an gain some previous knowledge." he added weakly, twiddling his thumbs, " I'll know soon enough who i was...then I'll be able to answer that question better of you."
he smiled, jumping to his feet and making a sweeping motion toward the outside door, " Well. Enough of that. Where to doctor?"

"Well, I guess that's for the best for you, then." Clarence said slowly, looking but at the demon. He smiled. "I hope that goes well for you... and you do regain some knowledge, it might help making others like you." The doctor paused. "But I think your enough." Clarence watched him jumped off the bench then swept his arm towards the outside, and asking where to. There were a few places Clarence could think of, but then mentally slapped himself. It was obvious the demon didn't like contact...Let alone... Clarence shook his head and walked over, pushing the door open.
With a graceful step, he was out into the cool air of the rest of the lab. He shivered again and looked at Jareth. "I think I want to stop at my dorm so I can drop off my swimsuit and towel. You aren't supposed to go to that level of the lab... but if we're careful, we won't get caught." Clarence said, a devious smile breaking out over his lips. He was sure the demon would approve.
He led the way up the stairs and to the way to the scientists dorm. He swiped his wrist on the scan bar outside a door and it swung open into a kitchen like area and and three rooms that had closed doors. Dr. Hart's 'roommate' wasn't in and he sighed a breath of relief. "Welcome." Clarence said as the door swung shut behind Jareth. They were alone...Clarence's pulse quickened again and he let out a shuddering breath. The demon's presence was wrecking havoc on his nerves.
He opened the door to his bedroom. It wasn't what one would expect when looking at sweet, innocent Dr. Hart. Loving and compassionate Dr. Hart. The room was of pure white and a single bed, with white sheets, and a bedside table with just an alarm clock on it. A closet was in the far wall, but besides that, nothing else was in the room. It was just a place to sleep. He hung his trunks and towel on the door handle. He turned to Jareth, his eyes guarded and careful. "Why don't you come in for a moment?" He asked indicating his bed.
