She sighed, "An other poor child whose life has been taken away from him by the government in hopes of capturing power for themselves."
A blond nurse nearby smiled, "It's better they end up in here than out in a world that doesn't want them or understand them."
"Have you seen the number of blood tests they want done on him? Do you know how much blood we are going to have to take from him? " Carine threw the papers on a desk in the corner, "And they want a behavioral implant? The poor boy has been here less than a week and they have already labeled the kid as impossible to handle and in need of a device that will permanently remove freewill from his being. How can you say this is a better life for him? When has the government ever been permitted to overturn the laws that regulate our rights and freedoms? Never, that's when. So why is it acceptable for them to disregard the rights and freedoms of these people just because they are different? Just because something in their blood that permits our experiments?"
Carine stopped and let-out an exasperated sigh before tying back her long hair and exiting the office and walking down the white halls. The blond nurse followed behind her.
"You know, you have been no fun to hang around since you lost that kid." Said the nurse as she tried to catch Carine's eye's with hers, " I'm guessing you've been getting a lot of heat for that huh?"
Carine pushed passed two swinging doors and entered the operating room, "You have no idea."
'Well.." The blond nurse said thoughtfully, "At least they're not holding you back for it."
Carine stopped and thought this over, "I know! There even letting me preform operations now. Signs of promotion, right? Strange that...." She turned back and strode into the operating room.
The operating room was white, like all the other rooms in the building, and was full of tools and machinery that had been build so that it could also be as white as possible. In the middle of the room, a young boy lay on an operating table, quivering under the restraints that held him. She noticed that the boy was already hooked up to an IV drip. Carine placed her hand on the boy's arm. He flinched at her touch.
"Hello Robert." Carine smiled, "My name is Dr. May, I'm going to make sure you're healthy today. Ok?"
The boy nodded.
"Ok. Good. First, I have to give you a little shot." As she lifted a needle from her table of utensils, the boy tensioned, "It's ok. It wont hurt, it will just feel like a small pinch."
Carine found a vein on the inside of the boy's right elbow and pushed the needle under the skin, gently pressing down on the end of the syringe and ejecting its contents into the boys body. The boy shook with fear. once she had emptied the syringe, Carine quickly removed the needle and covered the small entry wound with a cotton swab, "That wasn't so bad, was it?"
The boy shook his head.
"Good." Carine laid the needle back on the table, "You're a brave boy Robert. Now, you're going to feel a little sleepy, that's ok, just close your eyes and fall asleep." Carine smiled and bent down so that her eyes were level with the boy's, " And you know what? When you wake up, there will be a huge meal waiting for you. Ok?"
"Ok." The boy whispered back.
Carine stood up and patted the boys arm. With in seconds, the boy was fast asleep. Carine tucked her long hair under a hair net the best she could, put a mask over her mouth and slipped on a pair of sterile gloves. The blond nurse had done the same.
Carine smiled as the blond nurse handed her a scalpel, " I wish all patients I operated on were as trusting."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carine slipped off her pair of bloody gloves and tossed them into a garbage-can as she exited the operating room. Robert's examination went well. By her calculations, the boy could live 70 more years if the government would let him. Unfortunately, there was little hope that the government would find him useful for that long.
She slumped down into her desk chair and leaned back, reaching over to grab an other bundle of papers from the nearby desk.
" Is this it for you today?" The blond nurse asked, stepping over to the sink and washing her arms clean.
"No..." Carine drawled, " Looks like I've got one more job tonight." She looked up at the clock above her desk. The hands told her in was seven past six.
"Another?" The blond frowned, stopping the tap and drying her hands on a towel, " Their running you ragged. Promotion on the horizon for sure!"
Carine nodded shyly, " If i don't end up messin' up again."
The blond chuckled and grabbed a bag hanging near the door, " Well, I'm off now. I'm going to get changed and then head to the bar down the street. if you're done at a reasonable time, I'll see you there?" The woman offered hopefully.
"Yeah," The Doctor bleated, not fully listening, " Sure, later."
The blond sighed, " Alright..." She said unconvinced, " See you there."
The woman grunted. She was to engrossed in her research to listen.
